XDA Zinc Coming Soon to o2 UK

We were first to tell you about the availability of the o2 XDA Orbit the other day. This, of course, means that there's room for new handsets on o2's "coming soon" page .. well, lookie here! It's none other than the o2 XDA Zinc with it's Intel PXA270 520 Mhz CPU, 802.11b/g WiFi, QWERTY slide-out keyboard, Bluetooth V2.0 and 2 megapixel camera!

As you'll know already (because we've already published the manual etc) it's got single-band 3G, so roaming could be tricky if you want a quick internet connection, however we doubt anyone will want to download lots of data whilst abroad because it costs .. like.. a million pounds. This is a promising looking handset that we'd love to get our sweaty little mitts on. :)

Live radio on your Windows Mobile

Here in the UK we've got a fairly unique setup with TV and radio. There's a huge amount of commercial TV and radio stations but, if you have a TV or radio you have to buy a TV / Radio licence. The money from this goes to fund the BBC, with channels like BBC1, BBC2, BBC3, CBBC and radio stations like Radio 1, Radio 2 plus local radio stations too. There's never any adverts and they broadcast on the internet, satellite, FM, DAB and various other methods including "listen again" and podcasts.

Just recently they've started to include Windows Media streams for their live broadcasts (it was RealPlayer previously) which is great news for us Windows Mobile users. On the following page you'll find links to some of the major BBC radio stations - I've included this on our mobile version of this site at mobile.coolsmartphone.com so you can simply browse there and listen to then via your WiFi connection (if you have it), 3G or possibly even GPRS / EDGE if you have a good data plan.

Opera Mini - New version now available

Opera have launched a new version of the Java-based internet browser - Opera Mini. The free Web browser is available for all mobile phones and now includes new features such as photo blogging, RSS and secure connections.

To install, just browse to OperaMini.com from your handset or download via your PC here. It's a real shame that this application is Java based, and it means you'll have to fire up your Java MIDlet manager first, however it seems quick enough and the new features - such as being able to subscribe to RSS on the fly - are well implemented. When I gave it a try our RSS feeds showed up in a special section right at the top of the screen making it quick and easy to subscribe. We gave this feature a good workout and the results can be seen below (click "read more").

WIN! One of three FM transmitters to give away!

If you've got a mobile which is crammed full of MP3's you'll no doubt want to listen them on the move. The excellent Audia X Transmitter will let you do this by broadcasting the output of your device onto an FM frequency of your choice. A few people have already emailed me about this with questions like..

"My device doesn't have a 3.5mm or a 2.3mm plug - it's a miniUSB only! How do I use this transmitter without the necessary 3.5mm plug?"

Well, as Michael Winner would say, "calm down dear", we've got the answer. Hopefully this miniUSB -> 3.5mm adaptor should do the trick.

What? You want more ? Well you got it. We've got three Audia X transmitters to give away to you lucky readers. All you need to do is open a ClickPayGo account in our software store. Don't worry - you're not going to get signed up for anything crazy, a ClickPayGo account simply lets you re-download your purchases at anytime and you get stacks of free stuff just for opening an account anyway!

Enter now - just open an account and we'll announce the winners on Friday! Good luck!!

o2 XDA Orbit now available with free sat-nav

Just 20 days ago we were first with the news that o2 UK were getting ready to push the GPS-equipped XDA Orbit. Well, the news gets even better - it's now available to buy from £85.10 and it comes with free CoPilot sat-nav worth £159.99! (Yes, you read that right, it's FREE).

There's a 2 Megapixel camera, WiFi, FM radio and it's quad-band too. The only possible downer is the lack of 3G, however that free CoPilot and on-board GPS will probably more than make up for it. :)
